Using Social Media to Link Young Unemployed People with Local Businesses

YouPro Europe
The project built on existing best practice from Italy and Norway, with partners seeking to add further value by developing additional innovation by creating a unique educational programme in the field of social media. Responding to the ‘new skills, new jobs agenda’, partners put together a programme that trains young people to use their social media skills commercially. There was a shared common belief that young people not in employment, education or training (NEET) often had excellent but under-utilised social media skills. This project developed a new education programme to develop both employability and social media skills.

What Benefits Did the Project Provide?
The programme developed was piloted in 6 of the partner countries, working with 120 young unemployed people searching for work. It had them working for small to medium enterprises (SME’s) producing a social media campaign, giving a real work placement which developed employability skills. The businesses involved have all benefited by either improving their existing service or in the majority of cases having a social media promotional offer created for them. The programme is sustainable in the long term with 6 of the partners adding it to their teaching and learning offer. This has created new provision for learners and employers.
Project Activities
The partnership built on existing work from Italy where they had brought together professionals from the advertising industry to coach and mentor young people in using social media for commercial activity. They had developed units of learning which the partners added to and adapted for local market conditions. Added to this was a Norwegian innovation in employability skills which raised young people’s understanding of the social conventions of the workplace. This was developed and fitted to the European Qualifications Framework to become a recognised and accredited programme.
Project Outputs
  • Developed new training relevant to business and employer need
  • Through the pilot programme benefitted 120 Small and Medium Enterprise’s by updating or creating a specific social media promotional tool for their business
  • Provided training for 120 NEET's across Europe
  • Shared and developed best practice
  • Updated the curriculum of 6 partner organisations

What Do Those Involved in the Project Think?
Chris Mortimer – Tiger Solutions Ltd: “We have created a new programme that assists SME’s to take advantage of the social media revolution, something that adds real value to their bottom line, and the best thing about it is that it provides real work experience for young people using skills that they have in abundance.  It’s a real ‘win-win’ for everyone involved”.

The work carried out was made possible with the support of the Erasmus+ programme of the European Union.
